Battery testing
A car that will not start does not always need a new battery. A loose terminal, a failing alternator, a tired starter or a drain from an accessory all look the same from the driver seat. Testing is how we tell them apart, and it is the first thing we do on every call.
A healthy, rested battery reads about 12.6 volts. With the engine running, most charging systems sit somewhere around 13.7 to 14.7 volts, though cars with smart alternators vary. The tester also estimates cranking ability against the rating printed on the label, which shows wear that a simple voltage reading hides.
Testing before summer is worth doing on any battery that has already been through a couple of hot seasons. It is quicker and cheaper than finding out in a car park in August.

How do I know if it is the battery or the alternator?
If the car starts with a jump and keeps running but will not restart later, the battery is the likely cause. If it starts and then dies, or the battery light stays on while driving, suspect the alternator. A charging test confirms it in minutes.
How often should a car battery be tested in the UAE?
Once a year is a sensible minimum, ideally before summer. After the second summer, a test every six months catches most failures before they leave you stuck.
Can a battery pass a voltage check and still be bad?
Yes. A worn battery can show a normal resting voltage and then collapse under the load of the starter. That is why a proper tester measures cranking ability and internal resistance, not voltage alone.
Do you test the battery even if I only asked for a jump start?
Yes. Every jump start ends with a battery and charging test, because the reading tells you whether the car will start again tomorrow.
