How MG cars treat their batteries in the UAE

Battery technology

The non-turbo 1.5 cars, such as the MG5 and most ZS versions, generally use a conventional maintenance-free flooded battery. Turbo models with automatic start-stop, including many HS, RX5 and MG7 versions, need an EFB or AGM battery to cope with repeated restarts. Electric and plug-in versions still carry a 12V auxiliary battery. We read the label on the battery already fitted and match technology and size rather than guessing from the model name.

Fitting and registration

On the petrol range the battery is in the engine bay, usually on the left side, and access is straightforward. Start-stop cars often have a sensor on the negative terminal that has to be refitted correctly and left undamaged. A scan-tool registration is not normally required, but start-stop can take a few drives to come back while the car relearns the new battery. We check terminal layout and the hold-down clamp, because a battery that is nearly the right size will work loose.

Which battery type does an MG need?

It depends on the engine and equipment. Non-turbo cars such as the MG5 usually take a conventional flooded battery, while turbo models with start-stop need EFB or AGM. The label on the battery already in the car is the reliable guide, and our technician checks it before fitting.

Does an MG need battery coding after replacement?

Normally no. Most MGs accept a correctly matched battery without a scan-tool registration. On start-stop cars the system may stay inactive for a few drives while it relearns the battery state. If a warning stays on after that, we test the charging system and sensor.

Why does my MG battery go flat when the car is parked?

Connected features, the alarm and the infotainment unit draw a small current while parked, and summer heat weakens the battery at the same time. A healthy battery should cope with a week or two. If yours does not, we test battery health and measure the standby drain.

Can you change the 12V battery on an MG ZS EV or MG4?

Yes, the 12V auxiliary battery on electric MGs can be tested and replaced where the car is parked. It powers the computers that switch the car to Ready, so it stops the car like any flat battery. We do not work on the high-voltage pack at the roadside.
