Battery technology

The main battery is AGM on nearly every model from the last decade and more, in European DIN sizes. Older cars without stop-start may have a flooded battery. The auxiliary battery is a small sealed unit on many models; some newer ones use a capacitor-based converter instead. Cars with 48V mild-hybrid systems still have a 12V battery.

Fitting and registration

Location varies a lot: under the bonnet near the bulkhead on many C-Class and GLC models, under the front passenger seat on the M-Class, GLE and GLS, in the boot on recent S-Class generations, and in the passenger footwell on earlier A-Class and CLA. We keep the car powered during the swap. Mercedes does not need BMW-style registration, though a diagnostic check afterwards is good practice.

What does Auxiliary Battery Malfunction mean on a Mercedes?

It means the small secondary battery, or the converter that replaces it on some models, is no longer holding voltage. The car normally still starts and drives, but stop-start is disabled. It is a separate part from the main battery, so we test both before replacing either.

Can a Mercedes battery be changed at the roadside?

Yes for most models. The main battery is reachable with hand tools, including the under-seat and boot positions. It takes longer than on a simple car because of covers, vent tubes and keeping the electronics powered. Send the model, year and your location pin and we confirm before dispatch.

Does a Mercedes need an AGM battery?

If the car came with AGM, which covers almost all models with stop-start, it must be replaced with AGM of the same size and similar capacity. A flooded battery will not cope with the charging strategy and restart load, and it is unsafe in a cabin or boot position.

Will I lose settings when the Mercedes battery is replaced?

We connect a memory supply during the swap so radio, seat and window settings are normally kept. If power is lost, the windows and sunroof may need a simple resynchronisation and the steering angle sensor resets by turning lock to lock. The technician checks these before leaving.
