Battery technology

Most petrol Hondas use a conventional flooded battery in a JIS size. Newer turbo models with idle-stop need an EFB or AGM battery, as shown on the original label. e:HEV hybrids have a small 12V auxiliary battery that powers the computers and relays, separate from the hybrid pack. The V6 Pilot and Odyssey take a larger battery than the four-cylinder cars.

Fitting and registration

The battery is in the engine bay and easy to reach. Some smaller Hondas use thin JIS terminal posts, so a battery with standard posts will not clamp properly. Newer cars have a battery sensor on the negative terminal. No coding is needed, but after power is disconnected the idle may need to relearn, one-touch windows may need resetting and older audio units can ask for their security code.

Will my Honda radio ask for a code after a battery change?

Older Honda audio units can lock and ask for a security code when power is removed. Many newer ones recover by holding the power button for a few seconds. Have the code card ready if your car is an older model, or tell us before we start.

Why does my Honda idle roughly after a new battery?

Disconnecting the battery clears the idle settings the engine computer had learned. The idle can hunt or sit low until the relearn is complete, which involves letting the warm engine idle with all electrical loads off. Our technician does this before leaving.

Can you replace the battery on a Honda hybrid?

We test and replace the 12V auxiliary battery on site. It is the usual cause when a hybrid will not show Ready. The high-voltage hybrid pack is a different component and is dealer or specialist work. If the 12V side tests healthy, we tell you.

Why do Honda batteries seem small?

Honda sizes the battery for a small, efficient engine and a tight engine bay, which leaves less reserve for long parking and heavy AC use. Stay with the specified size and terminal type. A larger battery only helps if it truly fits the tray and clamp.
