Transmission Repair: how we handle it

Automatic transmissions are controlled by fluid pressure and electronics, so diagnosis comes before spanners. The workshop reads the fault codes, checks the fluid level and condition, looks at live data and road tests the car. Many faults turn out to be fluid, a solenoid, the valve body or software, not a complete rebuild.

This service covers conventional automatics with a torque converter, CVT units and dual-clutch transmissions. All of it is workshop work. Does a transmission fault always mean a rebuild?

No. Many problems are solved with the correct fluid, a solenoid, a valve body repair, a sensor or a software update. A rebuild or replacement is considered when there is internal mechanical damage, such as worn clutch packs. The diagnosis tells you which case it is.

Should I change the transmission fluid?

Follow the manufacturer schedule for your car. Some units have a set interval and others are described as filled for life, though many workshops still advise a change in hot climates. Using the exact fluid specification matters more than anything else.

Can I drive with the transmission warning light on?

Drive as little as possible. Limp mode limits the gears to protect the unit and is meant to get you off the road, not through the week. If the car slips, bangs into gear or will not move, stop and have it carried on a flatbed.

Why does my CVT or dual-clutch car judder?

On a CVT it is often fluid condition or belt and pulley wear. On a dual-clutch unit it is usually clutch wear or lost adaptation, especially after heavy stop-start traffic. Both need a scan and a road test to confirm before parts are ordered.
