Gearbox Repair: how we handle it

This page covers manual gearboxes and automated manuals, the type with a clutch and gears inside but an actuator doing the shifting. Their faults are mostly mechanical: worn bearings, tired synchro rings, loose or stretched shift cables, leaking seals and collapsed mounts. Each has a recognisable noise or feel, which helps the diagnosis.

Gearbox work is done in a workshop, because the unit usually has to come out of the car. If it still drives, it can be driven in. If gears will not engage or there is a heavy leak, we collect it on a flatbed. For conventional automatics, CVT and dual-clutch units, see transmission repair.

What is the difference between gearbox repair and transmission repair on this site?

Gearbox repair here means manual and automated-manual units, where faults are mainly mechanical. Transmission repair covers conventional automatics, CVT and dual-clutch units, where fluid, valve body, solenoids and software are the usual suspects. If you are not sure which you have, tell us the car and we will direct you.

Can I keep driving with a noisy gearbox?

A light whine may last a while, but it will not improve. Grinding, jumping out of gear or a leak can damage gears and leave you stuck without drive. Have it checked early. A bearing replaced in time is a smaller repair than a damaged gear set.

Does the gearbox have to be removed?

Not always. Linkage, cables, mounts, some seals and oil changes are done with the gearbox in place. Bearings, synchros and internal gears need the unit removed and opened. The workshop tells you which applies after the inspection.

How long will the car be in the workshop?

External repairs are often finished the same day. A gearbox that has to be removed and rebuilt usually takes several days, depending on what is found inside and how quickly parts arrive. You get a time estimate after the inspection.
