Clutch Replacement: how we handle it

A clutch wears a little every time you pull away, and stop-start traffic wears it faster. When the friction disc is thin, the engine revs rise but the car does not pick up speed, most obviously uphill or in a high gear. Replacement means removing the gearbox, so it is a workshop job that takes most of a day or more.

The clutch is replaced as a kit: friction disc, pressure plate and release bearing together. The flywheel is inspected and resurfaced or replaced if it is scored or, on a dual-mass type, has too much play. Before any of that, the hydraulics and the pedal are checked, because a failed cylinder can feel like a worn clutch.

How do I know the clutch is worn and not something else?

A simple check is to drive in a high gear at low revs and press the accelerator firmly. If the revs climb without the car speeding up, the clutch is slipping. Difficulty selecting gears with a normal bite point points more to hydraulics or linkage.

Why replace the whole kit and not only the disc?

Most of the labour is removing the gearbox. The pressure plate and release bearing have done the same distance as the disc, so fitting them together avoids repeating the same labour a few months later if one of them fails.

Does the flywheel need replacing too?

Only if it is damaged. A solid flywheel with light marks can often be resurfaced. A dual-mass flywheel is checked for play and noise and replaced if it is outside limits. The workshop shows you its condition once the gearbox is out.

Do automatic cars have a clutch to replace?

Conventional automatics use a torque converter instead. Dual-clutch and automated-manual cars do have clutches, and they wear too, but the work and the set-up procedure are different. Those are covered under transmission repair and gearbox repair.
