Scratch Repair: how we handle it

Most scratches come from car parks: a trolley, a door opened too wide, a key, a pillar in a tight basement. How a scratch is repaired depends on how deep it goes. A mark that sits in the clear lacquer can be polished out completely. One that has cut through to the colour or primer needs paint put back into it.

A simple test helps. Run a fingernail across the scratch. If the nail does not catch, polishing will usually remove it. If it catches, touch-up paint and levelling will make it far less visible, though a close look may still find it. Send a photo first and we will tell you honestly which result to expect.

Can every scratch be polished out?

No. Polishing works only on scratches that stay within the clear lacquer. If you can see a different colour, grey primer or metal in the scratch, the lacquer has been cut through and polishing will only soften the edges. That scratch needs touch-up or paint.

Can scratch repair be done at my home or office?

Usually yes. The technician needs a shaded spot, since polish and touch-up paint do not behave well on a hot panel in direct sun. A covered parking space or basement works well. Check that your building allows the work in its parking area.

How long does a scratch repair take?

It depends on the number and depth of the scratches. A few light scuffs are a short job, while several deep scratches with touch-up layers that must dry between coats take longer. You get a time estimate once we have seen photos.

Is a small scratch worth repairing?

If it shows only in the lacquer, it is cosmetic and can wait. If you can see primer or bare metal, seal it soon. Exposed metal can rust, and coastal humidity speeds that up. A small touch-up now avoids a panel repair later.
