The Honda Civic and its 12V battery

The Honda Civic has been sold across 55 model years (1972-2026), and its battery changed between generations in size and sometimes in technology. That is why we start with the model year and a photo of the battery label before loading a replacement.

Later Honda Civic model years may have start-stop or a battery sensor that controls charging. Where they do, the replacement has to be the same type (EFB or AGM) and may need registering to the car.

On older Honda Civic model years the fault is sometimes a corroded terminal, a tired earth strap or a weak alternator, not the battery itself, which is why the charging system is tested before we recommend a replacement.

Most petrol Hondas use a conventional flooded battery in a JIS size. Newer turbo models with idle-stop need an EFB or AGM battery, as shown on the original label. e:HEV hybrids have a small 12V auxiliary battery that powers the computers and relays, separate from the hybrid pack. The V6 Pilot and Odyssey take a larger battery than the four-cylinder cars.

The battery is in the engine bay and easy to reach. Some smaller Hondas use thin JIS terminal posts, so a battery with standard posts will not clamp properly. Newer cars have a battery sensor on the negative terminal. No coding is needed, but after power is disconnected the idle may need to relearn, one-touch windows may need resetting and older audio units can ask for their security code.
