How Fiat cars treat their batteries in the UAE

Battery technology

The 500 uses a small European-size battery, and the tray does not accept a larger case. Versions without Start&Stop take a conventional flooded battery. Start&Stop versions of the 500, 500X and Tipo are built with EFB or AGM and a battery sensor on the negative terminal. The Ducato van uses a much larger battery sized for diesel cranking.

Fitting and registration

On the 500, 500X, Tipo, Linea and Doblo the battery is under the bonnet with fair access. On the Ducato it is under the cab floor in the footwell, beneath a panel, with jump points under the bonnet. No dealer coding is normally needed. On Start&Stop cars the sensor relearns after the car has rested locked for some hours. If a 500 clicks but will not crank with a good battery, the engine earth strap is the next thing to check.

Can a bigger battery be fitted to a Fiat 500?

Not really. The 500 battery tray and clamp are made for one compact case size, and a larger battery will not sit or clamp properly. The better upgrade is a quality battery in the correct size with a higher rating, or EFB on cars with Start&Stop.

Why does my Fiat 500 show a steering warning light?

The 500 has electric power steering that needs stable voltage. When the battery is weak, the steering unit can switch off and light the warning, usually right after starting. A battery and charging test is the first check. If both are healthy, the steering system itself needs a workshop diagnosis.

My Fiat 500 clicks but will not start after a new battery. Why?

A well-known cause on the 500 is a corroded or broken earth strap between the gearbox and the body. The battery is fine but the starter cannot get current. A voltage drop test finds it quickly. The strap is a workshop repair, so we tell you if that is what we find.

Where is the battery on a Fiat Ducato?

Under the cab floor in the front footwell, below a removable panel, not under the bonnet. For jump starting, Fiat provides connection points in the engine bay, so the floor does not have to come up. Replacement takes longer than on a car because of the access.
