Later Audi A6L model years may have start-stop or a battery sensor that controls charging. Where they do, the replacement has to be the same type (EFB or AGM) and may need registering to the car.

On older Audi A6L model years the fault is sometimes a corroded terminal, a tired earth strap or a weak alternator, not the battery itself, which is why the charging system is tested before we recommend a replacement.

Most Audis from the last fifteen years or so use an AGM battery, because of start-stop, energy recuperation and the heavy electrical load. Some smaller engines were supplied with EFB. Recent A6, A7, A8, Q7 and Q8 versions are 48V mild hybrids: they keep a 12V battery that we can replace and add a 48V lithium unit that is workshop work. e-tron models have a 12V auxiliary battery in addition to the high-voltage pack.

Location depends on the model. The A3, Q2 and Q3 mostly have the battery in the engine bay. The A4, A5, A6, A7, A8 and Q5 generally carry it in the boot under the floor, and the first-generation Q7 has it under a front seat. Cars with a remote battery have jump-start posts under the bonnet. After fitting, the new battery is adapted with a diagnostic tool (capacity, technology, manufacturer and serial) so the energy management starts from a known state.
