The Volvo 260 and its 12V battery

On older Volvo 260 model years the fault is sometimes a corroded terminal, a tired earth strap or a weak alternator, not the battery itself, which is why the charging system is tested before we recommend a replacement.

Volvos with stop-start use an AGM main battery, and most also have a small AGM support battery that keeps the electronics alive while the engine restarts. Older models without stop-start run a flooded or EFB battery. Mild-hybrid versions add a separate 48V battery, which is a workshop item and not part of a roadside 12V change.

On XC90, XC60, S90, S60 and S80 the main battery is in the boot under the floor, with a vent tube that must be reconnected. XC40 and V40 carry it under the bonnet. The support battery is usually in the engine bay and can be awkward to reach. Newer Volvos have a battery monitoring sensor, and the system should be told a new battery is fitted with a diagnostic tool. If that step cannot be done on site we say so before fitting.
