The Toyota Estima and its 12V battery

Later Toyota Estima model years may have start-stop or a battery sensor that controls charging. Where they do, the replacement has to be the same type (EFB or AGM) and may need registering to the car.

On older Toyota Estima model years the fault is sometimes a corroded terminal, a tired earth strap or a weak alternator, not the battery itself, which is why the charging system is tested before we recommend a replacement.

Most of the range (Corolla, Camry, Yaris, Hilux, Land Cruiser, Prado) uses flooded or maintenance-free calcium batteries in Japanese JIS sizes. Models with stop-start need EFB or AGM. Hybrids such as the Prius and Camry Hybrid use a compact 12V auxiliary battery, usually AGM with a vent tube when it sits inside the cabin or boot.

On petrol and diesel Toyotas the battery is under the bonnet with a simple top clamp. On several hybrids the 12V battery is in the boot behind a side trim panel. No battery registration is needed. After the change, one-touch windows and the clock may need resetting, and the idle can take a short drive to settle.
