What to know

The Jeep Commander and its 12V battery

On older Jeep Commander model years the fault is sometimes a corroded terminal, a tired earth strap or a weak alternator, not the battery itself, which is why the charging system is tested before we recommend a replacement.

Jeeps with engine stop-start use an AGM main battery, and several models add a small AGM auxiliary battery that powers the electronics during restarts. Older Wrangler, Cherokee and Commander models run a single flooded battery. Compass and Renegade with stop-start use AGM or EFB, so we follow the label on the fitted battery.

Wrangler and Gladiator have the main battery under the bonnet, with the auxiliary battery tucked beneath it on stop-start versions, so the main one has to come out to reach it. Grand Cherokee from 2011 onward carries the battery under the front passenger seat, with jump posts under the bonnet. No dealer coding is normally needed, but the battery sensor must be reconnected and both batteries should be healthy for stop-start to work.

Before we come

What to send for a Jeep Commander battery

  1. Your location pin, the road and which direction you were heading
  2. The model year of your Jeep Commander (it is on the registration card)
  3. A photo of the label on the battery fitted now, if you can reach it
  4. What the car is doing: slow crank, clicking, nothing at all, or a warning light
  5. Parking level and bay number if the car is in a basement

How it works

From your location pin to a car that starts

Four steps, and you know what is happening at each one. Nothing is fitted until the battery has been tested.

  1. 1

    Share where the car is

Send a location pin with the road name, direction of travel and the nearest exit or landmark. In a basement, add the level and bay.

  2. 2

    Confirm the car details

Make, model and year, plus a photo of the battery label if you can. That is how the right battery gets loaded.

  3. 3

    Get an arrival estimate

We check access and technician availability, then tell you when to expect us before anyone sets off.

  4. 4

    Test, then jump or replace

The technician tests the battery, explains the reading and carries out a jump start or a replacement. The car is started before he leaves.

Read all questions and answers

Which battery fits a Jeep Commander?

It depends on the model year and engine. AGM main plus small AGM auxiliary on many stop-start models; flooded on older ones. Send the year and a photo of the current battery label, and we match the size, terminal layout and technology before dispatch.

Where is the battery on a Jeep Commander?

For Jeep in general: Under the bonnet on Wrangler, Cherokee and Compass; under the front seat on Grand Cherokee. The exact position on your Jeep Commander can vary by generation, and the technician confirms it from the model year before starting.

Does a Jeep Commander need battery registration after a change?

For Jeep: Usually no coding; sensor reconnection and stop-start operation checked. If your Jeep Commander needs it, the technician brings the tool and does it on site after fitting.

Can you jump-start a Jeep Commander instead of replacing the battery?

Often, yes. If the battery is only discharged and tests healthy afterwards, a jump start is enough. If the test shows it can no longer hold charge, we explain the reading and can replace it on the spot.
