The BMW L7 and its 12V battery

On older BMW L7 model years the fault is sometimes a corroded terminal, a tired earth strap or a weak alternator, not the battery itself, which is why the charging system is tested before we recommend a replacement.

AGM is standard on almost every BMW with stop-start or brake energy recovery, which covers most cars from the last fifteen years or so. Older models may have a flooded battery. Sizes are European DIN. Some large models carry a second battery, and recent 48V mild-hybrids have an additional 48V battery alongside the 12V one.

On nearly all models the battery is in the boot, under the floor on the right side, with a vent tube and a safety terminal on the positive cable. After fitting, the new battery is registered with a diagnostic tool. If the capacity or type differs from the original, the car also needs coding to the new values.
